The Best Glacier Viewpoints You Can Reach by Car
Some of the planet's most jaw-dropping ice is visible from a public road, sometimes from the car itself. This is a guide for travellers who want the glaciers but not the gear — children in the back seat, mobility limits, or simply only a half-day spare.
1. Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse, Austria
The Franz Josefs Hohe viewpoint at 2 369 m looks straight down onto the Pasterze. Toll road, mid-May to late October.
2. Icefields Parkway, Canada
Highway 93 between Lake Louise and Jasper passes within sight of the Columbia Icefield, Athabasca, Saskatchewan, Crowfoot, Peyto and Bow glaciers. Driveable year-round; full attraction season May to October.
3. Carretera Austral, Chile
The Queulat hanging glacier viewpoint is a short walk from a roadside car park; further south, the Exploradores road reaches an active glacier tongue.
4. Ring Road, Iceland
Solheimajokull, Skaftafell and the Vatnajokull south coast outlets (Svinafell, Hofdabrekka, Hoffell) are all within a few kilometres of the ring road.
5. Glacier Bay Highway, USA / Alaska
The Mendenhall Glacier Spur Road brings any rental car to a visitor centre that looks directly at the calving face — possibly the easiest big glacier viewpoint in North America.
6. Karakoram Highway, Pakistan
The road between Sost and Gilgit gives roadside views of Passu, Batura, and the Hopar glaciers, with a few short scenic detours.
7. Tioga Pass / Eastern Sierra Loop, USA
Not strictly glacial — almost all the Sierra ice has gone — but the Palisades cirque is still visible from Big Pine.
8. Aoraki/Mount Cook road, New Zealand
State Highway 80 dead-ends at Mount Cook village with the Hooker valley walk-up. The drive alone is one of the great glacier roads.
9. Drottningvegur, Norway (Sognefjellet)
The Norwegian National Tourist Route Sognefjellet passes the small Smorstabbreen-fed tongues and the Jostedalsbreen outlet area is a short detour away.
10. Brenner-Stilfserjoch, Italy
The Stelvio Pass and adjacent roads give roadside views of the Forni complex and the Ortler north face glaciers in a single day.
Tips
Read the local park entrance fees before arriving — Iceland and the Icefields Parkway have either parking or park fees that can surprise. Always carry chains in shoulder seasons.
