Franz Josef vs Fox: Which Glacier to Visit
New Zealand's West Coast has a glaciological oddity: two major temperate glaciers, the Franz Josef and the Fox, descend from the Southern Alps almost to sea level — at the latitude of olive groves. For most visitors with one or two days in the area, the question is simple: which one? They differ less in scenery than in logistics and character.
Geography
Franz Josef descends from neve fields at 3 000 m to about 240 m above sea level in a steep, narrow valley. Fox does similar — 2 600 m down to 240 m, slightly broader valley. Both lie within Westland Tai Poutini National Park.
Distance and accommodation
The two villages — Franz Josef Glacier village and Fox Glacier village — are 24 km apart on the West Coast highway, roughly 30 minutes by car. Both have hotels, hostels and a few restaurants. Franz Josef village is larger and busier.
Walking access
Franz Josef has the easier walk-in: about 1.5 hours return from the car park to the closest safe viewpoint, on a wide flat track. Fox has a slightly shorter walk but the valley flooded several times in the 2010s and the lower track is rebuilt regularly. Check current status with DOC.
Heli-hike experience
Both run heli-hikes — helicopter to the upper ice, 2-3 hours of guided walking on the glacier, helicopter out. Franz Josef has slightly more operators and shorter waits in peak season. Weather governs everything; winds cancel flights.
Photography
Franz Josef has a more iconic narrow valley shot with the glacier filling the frame. Fox has a wider valley and Lake Matheson nearby for reflection shots of Aoraki/Mount Cook on still mornings.
Retreat
Both glaciers have retreated dramatically since 2008. Some viewpoints that gave a clear glacier view ten years ago now look at empty rock. The heli-hike experience is essentially unchanged because operators move with the ice.
When to go
October to May for the most reliable weather. June-August can be spectacular but flights cancel more often. The West Coast gets a lot of rain — build in extra days.

Combine both
If you have 2-3 days, stay one night in each village, do a walk in the morning and a heli-hike on the day with the best forecast.
