Ice Climbing on Glaciers
Ice climbing on and around glaciers — up serac walls, frozen waterfalls at the glacier margin, and the deep couloirs above the accumulation zone — is one of the most technically demanding and visually compelling activities in mountain sport. The equipment is specialised, the skill acquisition curve is steep, and the consequences of failure on vertical ice are severe. But approached progressively, with good instruction and appropriate venues, it is also one of the most accessible forms of technical mountaineering: a beginner can top-rope a short WI2 serac wall on their first outing and make real progress within a season.
Grade systems
Water ice grades use the WI system, running from WI1 to WI7 (and above for the hardest modern free climbs). The numbers correspond approximately to steepness and sustained difficulty:
WI1 is low-angle (under 50 degrees), walkable ice requiring crampons. WI2 is 50 to 60 degrees with good natural ice features. WI3 is 60 to 70 degrees with short steeper sections; a competent beginner can lead WI3 with practice. WI4 is 70 to 80 degrees and continuous, requiring efficient crampon and tool technique throughout. WI5 is 85 to 90 degrees for sustained sections with difficult rests; this is the threshold of serious technical climbing. WI6 and above involves vertical or overhanging ice with extremely demanding technique and physical strength. WI7 is the current ceiling of established free climbing on ice.
Mixed climbing — routes involving both ice and dry-tooling on rock — uses the M grade system, which runs from M1 (easy, well-protected mixed terrain) to M15 and beyond for the hardest competition-derived routes. M grades are relevant on the rock bands and couloir walls above glaciers in the Alps and Rockies.
Ice tools
The two tools that dominate technical ice climbing are the Black Diamond Cobra and the Petzl Quark, both of which have been the reference designs in their respective generations of the sport.
The Petzl Quark is a modular tool with interchangeable picks and ergonomic grip angles designed for WI3 to WI6 climbing. Its T-rated technical pick is optimised for ice placement; the mixed pick extends it to dry-tooling. The swing weight and wrist rest geometry are well-matched to sustained vertical ice.
The Black Diamond Cobra WT (wide-tapered pick) has become a standard for north American ice climbing, with a slightly more aggressive curve than the Quark that many climbers prefer for very steep ice. Both tools sell in the range of 200 to 300 euros or dollars per tool; a pair is the minimum for WI4 and above.
Leashless climbing — no wrist leash connecting tool to hand — is the current standard for technical ice. Tools are dropped and retrieved rather than held continuously; this requires greater grip strength and better swing accuracy than leashed climbing but allows far more natural rest positions.
Crampons: monopoint versus dual-point
Technical ice climbing crampons use either a single front point (monopoint) or two parallel front points (dual-point). Monopoint crampons excel on mixed routes and steep ice with narrow placements; dual-point is more stable on pure ice and the preferred choice for most WI3 to WI5 climbing. The Petzl Dartwin (dual-point, modular for mono conversion) and the Grivel G-Fly and G-Winfly are the leading current designs. Rigidity is critical: ice crampon models are stiff and designed only for stiff-soled technical boots, not for the semi-rigid boots appropriate for glacier trekking.
Ice screws
Ice screws are the primary protection on ice routes. They are hollow, threaded cylinders of high-strength steel driven into the ice by rotation, with a hanger at the top for clipping a carabiner. Modern screws have a gear-rack and pinion mechanism (Petzl Laser Speed Light, Black Diamond Express Ice Screw) that allows one-handed placement by wrist rotation without the cumbersome two-handed turning of older models.
Screw lengths: 10 cm for thin ice over rock; 13 cm for general ice climbing and the most commonly carried length; 16 cm for good deep ice and anchor building; 19 and 22 cm for building bomber anchors or equalised V-thread/Abalakov anchors. Carry a rack of six to eight screws for a moderate glacier ice route; four to six for a single-pitch top-rope venue.
The Abalakov or V-thread anchor — two intersecting bored holes through which a cord is threaded — is the preferred rappel anchor on ice, as it leaves nothing behind except the cord itself. The ability to drill and thread a V-thread is essential knowledge for any independent ice climber.
The vapour barrier debate
Some ice climbers use vapour barrier liners (thin waterproof socks inside the boot) to prevent moisture accumulation in boot insulation during multi-day ice climbing campaigns. The theory: perspiration cannot wet insulation that the vapour never reaches. The counterargument: skin does not breathe and comfort declines. For single- day glacier ice venues, the debate is academic; modern plastic mountaineering boots with integrated Koflach or Scarpa liners handle a day's moisture without issue.
Top glacier ice venues: the Alps
The Aletsch Glacier region above Bettmeralp in Switzerland offers several serac walls that local guides use for beginner glacier ice introductions, with WI2 to WI3 terrain accessible on day trips. The surrounding rock walls and frozen waterfall zones provide more technical mixed routes in cold winters.
Chamonix, France, is the global centre of glacier ice climbing culture. The Vallee Blanche descent from the Aiguille du Midi accesses extensive serac fields on the Mer de Glace, and the Argentiere Glacier above provides access to the north faces of the Grandes Jorasses and the Droites — among the most serious glacier ice objectives in the world. The Ecole de Glace in Chamonix offers structured beginner to advanced courses through the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix.
Cogne in the Aosta Valley, Italy, is one of Europe's top waterfall ice venues, with dozens of WI3 to WI6 routes in the Valnontey and Valeille valleys. While not on glacier ice directly, the approach from the Gran Paradiso glacier margins makes it a natural combination destination.
Athabasca Glacier, Canada
The Athabasca Glacier in Jasper National Park, accessible by road at the Columbia Icefield, hosts regular guided ice climbing introductions on its serac walls and crevasse margins. The Columbia Icefield Glacier Discovery Centre books half-day and full-day ice experiences. Athabasca is one of the most logistically accessible glacier ice venues in North America — the parking lot is within a short walk of the glacier toe.
Ouray Ice Park, Colorado
The Ouray Ice Park in Colorado is not a glacier venue but the most concentrated artificial ice climbing development in North America. The City of Ouray pipes water to spray across canyon walls, creating up to 200 routes from WI2 to WI5+ every winter. It is the best location in the western hemisphere to develop pure ice technique before applying it to the glacier environment.
